General Information
Program Title: "L," Rock Island's Mystery Main
Presenter: Harold and Alexandra Benedict
Program Specifics
He was a letter-to-the-editor and a short-term resident during the late 1830's, but what was his name? Some say that he was Silas Reed and was partly responsible for changing the name of the town of Stephenson to that of Rock Island and for organizing the Whig Party in northwestern Illinois. However, he may have been Charles Lowell a lawyer from Maine whose brief relationship with Rock Island coincided with Reed's and who continued to be an object of local ridicule until long after his return to the East.
