General Information

Program Title: Rock Island's Lost Lincoln Case

Library: Moline Public Library (Add Library)

Presenter: Harold and Alexandra Benedict

Program Specifics

How did William Dickson, the founder of Milan, Illinois, become a footnote in biographies of both Abraham Lincoln and Daniel Webster? In 1837, Webster and Dickson both held limited partnerships in the Rock Island town company. During the early 1850's, Lincoln helped Dickson find a way to settle lawsuits for debts arising from the town's failure. The Lincoln Papers Project no longer classes this one as one of the Unknown vs. Unknown cases thanks to the Benedicts' research findings.
