General Information

Program Title: Rock Island's Urban Frontier: Deed-Slingers, Ghost Towns, and Frontier Flim-Flam

Presenter: Harold and Alexandra Benedict

Program Specifics

The town founding era of the 1830's introduced Rock Island and Henry Counties to the world of high finance, high risk, and high rates of failure. The site of Black Hawk's former village was a conspicuous example of combined local and out-of-state speculation. Alexandra Benedict has presented two papers at statewide conferences and a teacher workshop on the topic of town founding in the QC area during the 1830's.
